When the textbook changes!

Hi everyone,
I had an "aha" moment recently when the textbook updated to a 2010 edition and I still had the previous edition. When the learners ordered the text for the class, they received the latest and greatest.

What seemed even more shameful to me, I was one of the chapter authors. The publisher had yet to send me my desk copy! The desk copies are not due out until September.

Dr. Meers,

I agree with you, I prefer to have both the student and the instructor's textbook. The student's textbook allow me to see what information is provided to the student. Thus, making my lesson planning easier and I generally understand the need for clarification on complex topics in the textbook. The instructor's textbook is a great resource with additional notes, suggestions and references.

Hi Elizabeth,
Good strategy because you are right it is tough to always be on top of the latest developments in our field. Anything we can do to keep us informed will benefit our students.

I think we have all been there, or at least had a close colleague go through the same situation. I have learned to keep my ear to the tracks and walk into the book store between each quarter to be sure nothing looks new. In a perfect world, we would always be informed, but...

Hi Annette,
You are right. Both copies can be of value to your preparation and delivery.
Gary

I like having a student copy. However, the instructors copy is a great resource to have. I have used lesson plans and exams from the instructors copy. I like to use both.

I've had many changes with the books my school uses, and it can really cause problems with the flow of the class and make it seem as though you are un-prepared.

I also use the student copy, so I know exactly what they have and are reading. Funny, because when I was a student I dreamed of getting ahold of the teachers edition so I could know what they did. Now that I am doing the teaching, I find I have little use for the extra info in a teachers edition because of my experience and education has taught me the "extra" info.

Hi Wallace,
In using the student copy has that helped you with understanding where the students are coming from and the knowledge they are acquiring?
Gary

Hi Cheryl,
You have outlined one of the major problems with textbooks and you are one of the authors. This is why instructors need to have current materials available as handouts.
Congratulations on being an author. It is a compliment to your experience and expertise to be a part of a publishing effort like this.
