The Learning Environment Effect

What role does the learning environment play in the instructional process?

The learning environment needs to be one where students are comfortableand safe.  Having a comfortable and safe environment for learning will allow students to be more active participants and open to discussons related to the instructional materials.

@gmeers :The learning environment effects how instructors are able to teach and how students are able to obtain and learn information. The environment is very much a pivotal role in how comfortable students are within their learning process. The environment must be warm, inviting, and non-threatening.

The structure of the learning environment is important as it can function to make each student aware that his/her opinion is significant and each is expected to contribute.

The learning environment is important to the learning process. I try to break up lecture with short videos or demonstrations. This often allows students who are more visual learners a better opportunity to understand what the lecture has been about. At other times I divide the room into teams and have a competition to assess learning. All of these varied methods of learning provide for a different environment of learning and the combination of several may be what is needed to help a student obtain their goal.

The learning environment is important because the physical class room/lecture room makes the first impression on the student. A clean, well organized, learning environment lends to a clean, well organized learning experience. If a student walks into a train wreck of a class room that first impression may set up an uncomfortable learning experience.

The learning environment plays a pivotal role in the instructional process. I teach a 5-hour block course that is a combination of lecture and lab work and I teach it all in one room. On some days, I start with lab and so move all the tables and chairs out of the way before the students arrive to the classroom. Since most students prefer lab to lecture, when they arrive and are expecting lecture but the room is configured for lab, the change in the students'is palpable. Just changing your position, the lighting, the way you lecture can have a drastic effect on student engagement/participation and attentiveness.

Dr. Meers,
A well structured, safe, and welcoming learning environment is critical to the instructional process. As a Chef Instructor it is pivotal that I help them get comfortable in the classroom. if the student comes into my classroom and my equipment is unsafe, i have no goals set for the day or even a checklist, or i show up late and rushed then the student is more than likely not going to take the class seriously. The learning environment needs to spark interest in learning, that is why a professor should inspect their classroom and equipment each day, prior to class starting and after the class is over. this allows for the class to run smoothly and for the students to remain engaged as one teaches thanks in part to the environment being well structured, safe, and welcoming.

The learning environment plays a great role in the instructional process. The students that I teach get to learn the curriculum information in a classroom setting from the lecture, text book, workbook, games, videos, quizzes and test. But then they get to apply what they have learned in class to real life patients at a clinical site. It is amazing to see them do critical thinking and link it all together.

Most students today are visual learners, having an area where they can see what is being taught is the best environment. Letting them see videos and then show them the materials and instruments used is very helpful in the learning process.

The learning environment essentially sets the tone for the students. A positive learning environment will allow the students to feel comfortable. In addition to feeling comfortable, a positive learning environment allows students to gain confidence as they learn the material. A negative learning environment has a totally opposite effect. For example, a teacher who belittles students when they ask questions may cause students to suffer with understanding.

The learning environment is critical for student academic and personal success. The more positive the environment, the more the student will carry from the class in terms of knowledge. Positive environments foster optimal learning snd it is always tne instructor 's responsibility to use various methodologies to enhance this positive learning environment.

The learning environment plays a key role in being able to focus on the task at hand. I also think that the learning environment that the student creates for self study is equally as important. Unfortunately, today, we are all trying to juggle so many different things at once that setting an organized, quiet and dedicated work/study/learning environment is quite often a challenge.

As all of my work in done in a truck, I must make sure that both it and my students are safe.

The learning environment is very important to the instructional process. The more students feel comfortable in the classroom, the more willing they are to engage in the class.

Having activities that have students involved in the learning process is also important. For instance including group activities, videos, presentations, etc. Instructor have to be willing to try different methods to get students engaged.

One of the most common conflicts I have seen is when there are issues with the facility HVAC systems. The conflict arises when the students' need for a comfortable environment clashes with the dress code requirement for the program. While enforcing a required dress code is important, a student who is freezing is not going to be able to learn as well as a student who is comfortable. The hard part is getting instructors and administrators to recognize this.

If you have a positive learning environment, it means that students are comfortable and have good interactions with the teacher and other students.I believe learning becomes more enjoyable when in a positive learning environment.

John,
Good read of how your students position themselves and how their position reflects on their perspective value of the course. I teach a required for certification course in a multi-use room so I can appreciate what you are saying and how students position themselves. By reading them I can develop a strategy to get them engaged in the course even though at first they see little if any value to it.

The Learning Environment can set the tone of educational expectations on on the part of the students. It can reveal to the student something as important as to what degree of professionalism is expected. i.e. viewing the videos within these exercises, it is pretty clear from the learning environment, that the class was an advanced level course, and a higher level of academic professionalism is expected.
