As educators we need to make sure our students are comfortable. So that learning becomes a joy and not a burden.
Jeffery,
Like your example of how learning can occur anywhere but it is for use it won't be as effective. We need to strive to create a supportive environment for our students so we can get them engaged and focused on why they are there.

James,
Well said about how the environment impacts the emotions of the students. We need to bring a dynamic class to our students each time we meet with them. This is why we need to have passion for our field and enthusiasm for teaching about it.

The learning environment is very important -- it helps set the tone. Having the proper setting/venue and materials engulf the students in an environment applicable to what they hope to learn in your class. It's not that you could not teach medical lab technicians in a basketball gym, but it is not the best place to prime the student's mind for the lesson that will follow.

The learning enviornment is a contagious thing. If the environment is happy and full of excitment the students will feel this and they will become excited. Vice versa, if the enviornment is "boring" or uninteresting to the student they will disengage.
Andrea,
If the learning environment is not supportive or at the very least neutral then students are going to be put off from the very beginning in relation to the class. It is a must we have a setting that they can feel comfortable in and look forward to what is going to be shared.

The learning environment is important; if it is not conducive to learning, it will become an instant obstacle to your content and delivery. The environment needs to be free of distractions such as noise, clutter and activity unrelated to the class. It needs to be comfortable; if the chairs are uncomfortable or the room is too cold, these also become distractions that are taking away from your classtime and goals.
Laura,
This is such a great idea for getting students exposed to potential employers as well as building good will with these employers as they learn more about your products (students) that are coming out of your program.

We do the same thing by inviting our students to our advisory board meetings. That way they can speak with local employers to see what they are looking for and take those lessons back to their classmates.
Patricia,
Sounds like a supportive and reinforcing learning environment. This is essential if you are going to be able to keep your students engaged for the duration of the course.

I want my students to be excited to be in class so I arrange the room so they can communicate with me and the students without any distractions. I also have pertinent sayings on the walls of my room for them to read each time they arrive and comment on them. They get positive feedback from each other.
Liz,
This is a great way to get their buy in into the lab classes and getting them to start thinking like health care professionals. Plus, I am sure they have a lot of fun with their effort to develop their best clinical skills.

A vital role. A student who is comfortable, learns more.
The learning environment sets the tone of the class. I have noticed that a lot of the students wants to have "a fun class". Students don't want to go to a class where the instructor is just reciting what is in the book. They want to learn in a fun, challenging environment.
I like to make the students to feel part of the class. I teach lab classes and I always give them this challenge:" if you demonstrate good skills I will be your patient." The students love that challenge. They start competiting with each other to have the best clinical skills and it bring the best on them.
James,
Yes it does. The learning environment should reflect the latest technology and equipment that is used in the field for which the students are preparing to enter.

An exciting and course relevant environment facilitates a easer learning experience.
Learning environment allows the student to concentrate on the task at hand, learning the material
The learning environmnet plays a huge part in the instructional process. If the learning environment is too small, has poor acustics, is too hot or cold or is set-up poorly so that those that enter or leave are a significant disruption then learning willbe more difficult. Although many times we do not have controll over temperature we can set up our learning environments to best suite the student
In my classroom I engauge the students with real life scenarios pertaining to the perticular assingment being completed
