Great idea. This makes your content graphic and relevant for your students. They can visually see what you are talking about concerning the concepts the students need to know. Plus, I am sure they really enjoyed this form of instruction.

I like to try things that are a little different as well to catch the attention of my students. I find that unusual exercises tend to stick a bit better.
I taught a networking class once where we went through the process of sending packets over the network, using students as individual bits. Not only did they have to figure the process out, but it had them up and moving around the room. Quite a lot of fun.

I am sure your students really do appreciate these "real" world examples you offer them. In addition creating a real work like setting helps them to see what it is going to be like as they move forward with their careers. This will help them to transition from being students to contributors in the work setting.

I try to treat each student like an intern at an actual job. I present the materials to be learned the same way I remember receiving them when i worked out in the field. I give real examples that I encountered in the design field to the class and I find they really appreciate the fact that I'm trying to simulate a real world job experience with their learning objectives.

On way I try to be creative is by using technology such as, videos, commercials, youtube any type of media that will arouse their curiosity. I think it is important to relate the material to the "real world" and show them how to use the information that they learn in class in the outside world.
