Every student has a place in which they excel. I try to praise them on the things they do well and gently suggest places where projects may need adjustments after that.

It is often best to help students let themselves reach their potential by helping them envision a satisfying life working in the field of their choice.

Hi Gena,
Great question. Tough one to answer. In my years of teaching I have found that early success helps students to see their potential a little at a time. Once they get settled into the course and then have success they have self confidence to take even more risks in the course. With the risks comes success and the building just keeps going. Other students just continue to look for the easy way out even though they have the cognitive ability they just never catch fire. I always feel sorry for these students because they don't get to enjoy the benefits of their work by enjoying success.
