Learning capacity of students

How do you help students that have very low reading and writting skills?

I believe by taking that extra effort to tutor and help.

Hi Stanley,
There are so many different variables related to the question that it is a bit hard to answer. If you could supply me with some additional specifics I will be glad to make some recommendations. In the meantime I would suggest that you follow the information contained in ED 101 and then plan how you can establish a supportive learning environment for your students. Be prepared and have many practical examples of how the students can apply the content of the writing course in their lives. Application and relevancy should be the key words for your course.

What do you suggest for an instructor who is teaching an introductory writing course?

Hi Enrique,
One of the things I always consider when someone is unable to read is thier confidence level and not victimizing them for not knowing how to read. So, I always make sure to give them the motivation not to give up and send them to our tutor. As they continue the program, I encourage them more on staying through the course.
If the adult learner appears to not think they coulc make it, I tell them the story about the Eritrean guy who came from being a revolutionary war fighter not knowing how to read and now functioning in Seattle as a Doctor in Pharmacy. That usually shows them the light at the end of the tunnel.

Hi Enrique,
I would suggest you talk with your Student Services office. They should be able to assess the reading and writing skills of your low functioning students and determine at what academic they are. Then they should set up a tutorial program for these students. In your class you can provide them with guided notes or structured outlines which provides the highlights of the content that they must have for program success this reduces their need to read large amounts of material for the course. They key is to make sure they are able to meet the minimum standards of the course. If they can't then they may need improve their academic skills before they are allowed to enter your class.
