temperture control

:-) sometimes heat and air condition is not controled in the classroom and students must adhere to strict uniform policy ,this happens mostly during the winter. What i've allowed is jackets to be worn until 10 am.

I understand that. I am sitting in a room right now that I am freezing cold and its 95 degrees outside so I obviously didn't bring a jacket. I can't think about much of anything but how cold it is.

Hi Caitlyn,
I commend you for sticking with your desire to have a learning environment that is comfortable for your students. The students have to be comfortable before they are going to be able to concentrate on what is going on in the classroom. Sometimes college officials seem to forget this point and need to be reminded.

In our room we went through a period where the air would blow ice cold and then turn to very hot. Additionally, the air blew very loudly and never stopped, making it extremely hard to talk over, and also making it very hard to hear student discussion. After working with the maintenance people on the problem for a while, it has finally been resolved this week by a specialist! Not only do I still have my voice at the end of class, but the students are comfortable, which is very important when a majority of the class is a lecture.

Hi Elisha,
Good way to adapt to the environment in which you work. I am sure your students appreciate how the college uses a realistic approach to professional dress and adaptation to the climate.

Wisconsin here:::::it's either freezing, or totally hot! In the winter we allow students to wear long sleeve t-shirts under their scrubs. This way jackets, or hooded sweatshirts don't get in the way.

I agree. It is very hard to concentrate as an instructor when you yourself are cold and you know the students are freezing.

I have found like you said that this is a no win situation. I allow student to wear jakets or a school approved shirts. But also I try to conform to the majority of the class which seems to help

This seems like a constant battle. In the summer, the students are freezing due to extreme air conditioning. I allow them to wear jackets or hooded sweatshirts, but they are not permitted to wear hats (other than those which are part of the uniform). The one instance I don't allow jackets is during any during any type of formal presentation.

I agree with you, as long as students are in dress code..i feel that it is important to keep the students comfortable so that they will focus on the daily objective, rather than thinking of how cold they are.
