planning ideas
As an instructor what models do you use that help you prepare and plan?
Hi Ann,
Great to hear. I know you are going to have great success with your efforts.

this is going to help alot I have ideas but I don't know how to transfer them to the students
I like your method of planning. I do this myself with basic teaching strategies until I get the feel of the students in each class then I base my teaching strategies according to the learning needs of my students in that particular class. Each class is different so I find what method works for some classes does not always suite other classes due to student individuality.
I try to use this simplified model for each lesson plan.
1. Introduce the topic and the learning objectives.
2. Employ teaching strategies and activities (e.g. lecture, lab, etc.) best designed to help students meet the objectives.
3. Assess student learning to see if they met the learning objectives. In my opinion, this is the most important step, because it can be used to guide your instruction appropriately to student needs.
Sounds like a plan since I have a billion ideas right now. I think I would have to see it on paper first so that I wont confuse myself. I am not at that phase yet, but feel free to throw out as many ideas as you want.
Hi Katherine,
I use the tree model. The main trunk of the tree are the core concepts the students have to have in the course. From there I "branch" out to where I use examples, case studies, group learning activities, etc.. When the students have acquired the necessary knowledge and skills in this area I go back to the trunk and present another concept, branch out, back to the trunk, etc.. This way I know we have covered the key material in sequence with supporting assignments, content and activities without loosing our perceptive on what we need to accomplish by the end of the course.
