MEETING THE CLASS FOR THE 1ST TIME
EXCITING. ALWAYS REWARDING TO SEE THE STUDENTS EAGERNESS WITH MEETING NEW INSTRUCTORS. GOT A FEEL REALLY QUICKLY ABOUT STUDENTS AND WHAT THEY EXPECTED.
I teach at a small college. I have found that students enter my classroom for the first time armed with preconceived notions of who and what I am as a teacher. I try to carefully set the tone for the class to ensure that the (true) positive things they have "heard" about my classes are realized. Usually there are some "myths" that need to be dealt with. I think it's important to find out what the students expect from me as the teacher so I can clearly define (through objectives) what the goals of the class are and how we're going to get to the final Presentation.
Hi Amjad,
Right you are. We need to make sure that we set a positive tone the first day and build from there.

And the students get a feel of who you are!
It has been said that the first impression is the last impression; or lasting impression. It also sets the tone for the rest of the module or course

Hi Nick,
This first meeting is so important as you mention. It helps, if done right, to create a comfortable supportive setting for engaged student learning.

I AGREE, MEETING THE CLASS FOR THE FIRST TIME HELPS TO SET THE STAGE FOR OPEN, MEANINGFUL DISCUSSIONS AND ALLOWS THE INSTRUCTOR TO GET A SNAPSHOT OF WHO HIS STUDENTS ARE AND HOW HE CAN BETTER SERVE/TEACH THEM!
Metting the class for the first time is VERY crucial, let's face it, only 1 time to make good first impression. Instructors should be enthusiastic, welcoming, and most importantly approachable. I run a very tight ship in my class, but I do so in a way that lets my students know that I follow all rules (best way to display "modeling" skills) and I am human! I feel the students should be able to discuss concerns with you and not feel intimidated by you. It is possible to show authority without intimidation.
I agree!! Meeting the class for the first time really gives ME an opportunity to show the class how excited I AM!!!
