how to create a positive learning experience

how do you handle a situation if your the only instructor trying to create a positive learning experience...faculty is not being managed

Hi Kimberly,
What a compliment to you and your skills. To me putting forth the effort to be good at what you do is much easier because the rewards are much greater. So the better we are at teaching the impact we are going to have on the lives of our students.

This is a tough one. As faculty we don't want to overstep our boundaries or step on management's toes. But I have found that it can just start in your class room. We have the same problem and I just start in my classroom and make it a fun and positive learning experience for my students. They go and brag to other students and other instructors and say how much fun they have while learning in my class. Other teachers conform because they want the same accolades and recognition from students. I have students who literally go and request to be in my class or request for me to teach certain classes because they know it will be fun and exciting.

Hi Michael,
This is a tough situation to be in as a faculty member because you want to reflect what a professional educator is like when other don't. I have been in such situations so I speak from experience. My suggestion is to conduct yourself as a professional in every way from dress, behavior organization and preparedness. Set the standard for your students and you will find that they respect you and want to develop rapport with you as a result of your professionalism. Take satisfaction in this and don't worry about the other faculty. In many situations they start to come around. If they don't you know when you go home you have been a professional and should mean a lot.
