prepare a syllabus

go over the syllabus so the students know exactly what you mean

Hi Lashawnda,
I can appreciate where the students are coming from. When I have upper level courses I put different discussion points in the syllabus as we are going through it. This way the students can have input into the course while still getting the needed information from the syllabus.

A lot of my students get frustrated when I go over the syllabus because they are very similar to other classes that they have already taken. I teach one of the last classes that students take; therefore, they feel like they already know everything.

This is great. It gives the students time to prepare mentally for the class. In addition, they can ask questions and concerns beforehand so that it does not take away from valuable class time.

I send all of my students the syllabus at least two weeks before class, so that if there are questions, we can provide answers before the class starts. I have had many positive responces from this.

I think that is a really important concept. Going over the syllabus seems redundant but at the same time it guarantees the students have been told in writing and verbally what is expected of them and the classroom policies. For some who are auditory learners this may resonate with them more than the visual learners. I personally remember things I read more than those that people say out loud. It helps with multiple learning styles.

Also a great opportunity to ask the students if they have any specific questions.
