Motivating Learner

Wish I can apply what I learned.

Motivation is the good tool for learning.First emphasize the importance of being puntual in the class, should not give them hard work to do in the begining of the day, involve them in some easy topic/assignment of their interest, involve in the discussion, take their ideas, and engage them i8n crital thinks rather than in the orthodox lectures.

Hi Khalid,
What are some of the ways you motivate your students that you can share with other instructors?
Thanks for your input on this.
Gary

motivation is very important in learning for the students.motivation keep their interest in studies alive

The students that I have in my various courses are those changing carrers and are in need of motivation and encouragement. I find if I base my course on how the work environment will work into their studies this gives them a better understanding of how what they are learning will be applied. In other words these students need to know that the time they are spending in class will help them at their future job and better understand why they need to learn this subject to apply to their new carrer.

I concur. Giving the students insite as to how the course will be useful in an actual work environment will motivate them to want to increase their knowledge so that they can be the very best that they can be at their job.

Hi Lisa,
Good strategy for showing students both application and relevancy. You are making it real for the students when you show them exactly how they will be using the skills of your course.

To motivate any learner you have to WIIFM (“What is in it for me?”.) What does that mean? Well, the student always asks themselves, Why should I listen to this person? WIIFM tells them.
Tell the student what he will get out of your topic and how it may make his life easier or better. As stated, apply what is being taught to the outside world and how it will benefit the student in his life, if he listen carefully.

Many times for a student to be motivated you need to show them how the course will be used in a real life situation, I have students who are always questioning why they need to take a specific course I am teaching; I take them to the office where they will be working in and instruct them on how this course is a part of their career and they are a very important part of the whole picture. Some students can not see the whole picture and by you the instructor showing them how they are needed in the daily oporations this motivates them to complete their course.
