Hi Gerald,
Good point about the syllabus being a road map. This way everyone, both students and instructor will know when they have arrived at their "destination".
Gary

Hi Jamie,
Good point. This is one of the big values to a well prepared syllabus. Having a clear understanding of the expectations, polices and requirements of the course really helps students to feel comfortable with how the course is going to proceed and what it takes to be successful.
Gary

Hi Annette,
So true. The syllabus reduces confusion and helps students to get settled into the course. There is comfort knowing what the expectations are and how the course will proceed.
Gary

A well prepared syllabus is a "road-map" that will give the student a strong foundation. This "road-map" will clearly identify objectives, and how the student's academic performance will be evaluated. By clearly understanding these objectives the student is in a better position to succeed.

It gives all your students a chance to succeed. They have all the information about the course and it's expectations upfront which gives them the opportunity to as questions and make sure that they have a clear understanding of the course. It also gives students time to plan their outside of class learning far in advance giving them control of the pace at which they work. It also giving firm instructions of what is expected as well as a clear clear understanding of the benefits of taking such a course.

It is important for the professor and the students to have a well prepared syllabus. The syllabus will allow the student to have the expectations of the course for the entire term. I am looking forward to reviewing it weekly with the class. This will help the student to develope strategy for studing and allows the student to be prepared for class. This is my first time teaching a didactic class and I'm looking forward to useing a syllabus to guide the students.

Tracy, I also do the week by week calendar but also the monthly calendar. What can help also is recording of your lecture so that the students can go back and review what you went over and view and demos that you may have done during the class.

I feel it is important to have a well-prepared Syllabus because your students know what is
expected from them during the very first class period. Then at that time if there are any questions they can be answered.

A well-prepared syllabus lets your students know exactly what is expected of them. What is going to be covered in the course. When exams are . It also states what the attendance policy is and what they should know at the end of the course. it gives them the grading grid.

Hi Shiva,
Good point and one instructors need to keep in mind when developing a syllabus. It needs to contain critical information but not look like a 1000 page book as a result. Clear concise information needs to be included and that's all.
Gary

A well prepared syllabus serves as a guide for students and teacher. It helps the students to know what was expected of them and to stay on track.

It is sometimes challenging to create a
syllabus that is not too overwhelming for students
yet includes all needed Info. for students.

Hi Paula,
Thank you for sharing this example of the value of a well prepared syllabus. Planning saved the day for everyone and I am sure surprised the cohort group since they didn't have anything to point to as being flawed or lacking.
Gary

I have learned that having a detailed syllabus is imperative. We have a particulary "aggressive" cohort that as a group, likes to find something to complain or challenge faculty about at every turn. Had it not been for a well thought out syllabus, we would have not had a leg to stand on.

Hi All,
A has been mentioned by all of you a well prepared syllabus is a must. What are some of the challenges that you encounter as you complete syllabus development?
Gary

Your syllabus is the map for the class. Even if a student cannot make lecture the syllabus allows the student to follow the course.

Carla Eichelberger, MS

A well organized syllabus provide students with proper direction as to how to be prepared for the next class.

I always go over the syllabus on first day of class and make sure that students are clear about the content of the syllabus.

I review the syllabus thoroughly on the first day of class and I also utilize the syllabus to remind the students at the end of class when a big assignment is due in the following class. Sometimes I will ask about that assignment and have the students repeat back to me the due date so there will be no excuses for missing or incomplete work.
