Wow! I should have read the directions carefully!

I just made a student mistake. I was reading quickly Quiz #2, and kept missing one question. The green would highlight the correct answer, but in my rush, I did not realize that the answer wanted you to check all that applied. I was getting more and more frustrated because the overachiever in me would not accept less than a 100 percent on the quiz. Finally, I figured out the mistake I was making. This reminds me of how frustrated students must feel! This was probably the most inmportant thing I learned in the second module of ED101.

Frustrated students will spin out of control if they or someone else cannot reign them in and calm them down. Each of us need to have empathy for students who become frustrated! Sometimes the frustration is not a case of what they don't know but is rather a happenstance or oversight.

Jackie, I just did the same thing. I'm glad you could point out the lesson of what we are going through in this process with what our students might encounter. I realized when I looked at the correct answers what I had done, but hand't received this little gem of a lesson.

Thank you

Kathy

PS: It's also a good reminder for us to remind students at the beginning of a test or quiz to really read the questions and make sure they understand the question.

Jackie, I was doing the exact same thing...not reading carefully. I was ignoring the green highlight completely. I was more forcused of re-reading and getting the correct answer.

That reminds me of a quiz I was given in college years ago. Our class had a bad reputation for not following directions in class & lab.
The first line of the quiz was read the entire quiz and follow the directions to the letter. There were many directions to do nonsensical things. The last direction was to put your name and date on the quiz and ignore the other directions then sit quietly and enjoy the show.
We learned a valuable lesson that day. It also provided a good laugh, as I remember the class loosened up quite a bit after that.

Jackie,
Great example for all of us to reflect on. Sorry it had to happen to you in order to create such an example. Keep striving for excellence!
