end the class

As instructor what do you do after students finished their exam. and they want to be diss-missed before the regular dismissal time

Karen,
Depending on your class circumstances you might want to do the exam review the previous class session. This is what I do so I send the students away with a review sheet and our review discussion. They then study using the review sheet and are ready to take the quiz/exam the next class session. This way I know they are working with content they have acquired in their working memories rather than just jammed the content in their short term memories.

I find the students really like a review right before the exam but I actually have reservations about it; If I give a review immediately before the exam, I am not sure I am really getting a good picture of what they have learned with their exam answers. They might answer questions correctly because we discussed it 20 minutes ago but has it gone into their long term memory or will it be forgotten immediately!

Yes, I like to do a full review of the test beforehand. That way students will want to be there (and won't just show up at the end of class to take the test) and they will be engaged, even if they've already studied on their own outside of class.

It all depends on the rules of the instituition. Some are okay with letting the students leavy early....others are not

I also try to save my exam for the end of class. If they finish early they can leave class early.

The only real problem I have run into with this is the lack of focus on the material we cover before the test.

I like to get them talking about the subject in relation to their own lives. That way, they don't feel like they're being 'held' in class but actually enjoy being their and learning.

Depending on the format of the test I like to review the test if there is enough time available. Most of my students like to do this as we can discuss and debate some of the answers and even those who answered incorrectly get the benefit of the correct answer and the discussion.

Georgiajo,
Good way to keep everyone engaged while completing different activities. Thanks for sharing with us.

I do this as well. I don't like to wait until the end of class to give the exam because students will show up late or study while I am lecturing. To balance that I have worksheets for them to work on quietly while everyone else is still testing.

I have an assignment that must be completed after the test is done.

Fayez,
Is it possible to move the exam toward the end of the class session so the students can leave when they are through. This is what I do with my classes and as a result I don't have a problem with students wanting to leave early.
