Preporation

What are some strategies that are used commonly for preporations to teach a college level class for the first time?

Kristi,
I wish you much success as an educator and I welcome you to teaching profession. You have a great attitude and you are going to do fine with your students. Looking forward to hearing about your successes in the near future.

I too will be stepping into the classroom for the first time as an instructor. I am grateful that the institution that I am working for has my first class set up with goals, objectives, and a fine tuned syllabus. My goal is to personalize these with my life experiences and current events. I agree with Dr. Meers about reading, observing, and taking classes to familiarizing myself with the non-traditional learners and classroom management techniques.

Charlena,
There are a number of things a person can do that is new to the college classroom. Be organized and prepared to start with. Have a well developed syllabus ready to give out and know how to explain your expectations for the students and their performance. Talk to colleagues about how they approach the classroom, observe other instructors, read all you can about how to work with non-traditional learners. Put all these items together and you will be ready for your first class. Make sure to project your personality into the classroom. Don't try to be anyone but yourself. Work to earn the respect of your students and in return rapport will be developed with them and you will find that you have a great teaching experience in spite of being nervous about it.
