Safe and supportive learning environment
I have found it to be incredibly important to set the expectations for the learning environment the first day of class. Encouraging students to collaborate, listen and respect each others needs and opinions and to establish an "open door policy" in a philosophical sense for new ideas and questions allows learning to occur and continue to occur throughout the course.
Learning is a collaborative and continuing process and if students don't feel supported or safe in their ability to interact with their peers and teacher this process can't happen.
Jose,
Start by talking individually with that student and being clear as to what behavior will and will not be accepted. As for their cooperation in behaving appropriately. If they don't then inform your college and place the student on a behavior plan. If that does not work then the student should be removed from the class. A college cannot let one student disrupt the learning of others since everyone there is paying for the opportunity to learn.

I also agree with Kathy about the syllabus, objectives and rules of the classroom. Inappropriate behavior can not be tolerated. I hope that by setting these guidelines they can respect their instructor and fellow students, and follow all the rules. My question is, what if you have a disruptive student?
Audrey,
You and your students are fortunate that the class size is small and that you can get to know the students so well. I am sure this greatly increases their retention in the class as a result of the rapport you develop.

I agree that it is very important to set class expectations during the very first class. However, I have found that students who are returning to the school environment are often nervous that they will be able to keep up with the assignments and do well on assessments. Since my classes are usually very small (10 or fewer students) I am able to take the time to get to know the students and reassure them that I am there to support their efforts. I find ways to positively reinforce their efforts to build up confidence and excitement about their learning.
I agree that the syllabus and objectives are important to given to our students on the first day. I also believe the class rules should be laid out on that first day. With those 3 tools the students have a clear path as to what is expected of them, how they will be graded and consequences of inappropriate behavior. Once that know what they have to do it makes it easier for them to relax and set their personal goals for the class.
Eric,
So important to do. By laying the foundation the first day for a supportive learning setting with the expectations clearly spelled out the students know what is coming. They then can adjust their thinking to make sure they are ready for the learning that is going to occur.
