Preparing Early and Carefully

When preparing for class, it is very essential that you perpare early and consider the lesson being taught for that day. Waiting until the last minute to prep for class is never a good idea as it creates difficulties in ensuring that pertinent information is covered. I do not put a time on "prepping" for class becuase I am more concerned with making sure that my students are learning the objectives for the course, than the time it takes to prep. Preparing early is always a great idea!

Gayle,
Good for you. I am the same way. Yet, I will be in the copy room when one of my colleagues will rush in to copy handouts for the class with 2 minutes to go before class time. His or her face will be flushing they will be breathing hard and start smacking the copy machine to hurry it up. I can't imagine what it would be like to rush into a class juggling handouts, minutes late and starting a class. That is anxiety that can be eliminated easily with preparation.

Preparing early for a class not only benefits the students, but the instructor as well. It gives the instructor "peace of mind" and confidence that they are ahead of the game and completely ready for the course.

I would not even consider not preparing early. I cannot imagine how unorganized that class could end up being. I prepare long in advance and review the day before for next days class. If anything, I over prepare; if there could be such a thing. :)

Martin,
This is common for the reason you listed. The one on one asking of questions is for many students is a much more comfortable way of interacting with their instructor. By being there early you are providing them with an opportunity to ask their questions and get to know you more on a person to person basis.

I have students that arrive early each day. They bring me questions about things covered in class. Sometimes these students feel more confortable asking these questions ono on one.

Godwin,
This gives you self confidence as you approach the classroom. I do this as well and I know I am prepared for the class and can enjoy the interaction I have with students as a result.

I always prepare early for all my classes because it gives me time to anticipate possible questions from the students and just in case they don't have any questions for me i make a mental note to ask them.
