A well developed syllabus give a very good opportunity for the students to Know their daily responsibilities about the assignments and their deadlines, grading policy and topics that they need to know for passing the class.
Dr.Randy,
Since many colleges use syllabi as a contract between students and the college they do tend to expand as more and more content is included. The key is to make you review with the students the key components so they know and can see the course policies, requirements and expectations. Once I review these with them, I give them a one page course brief that highlights key dates and assignments. This way they have all the legal information as well as the target information they will need to meet the deadlines of the course.

My syllabus has grown every year! I find that I have to add in any and all possible situations that may come up during the semester.
