Curriculum and Supplemental Materials
I was just thinking about instructors I've had in the past that relied too heavily on the curriculum given by the institution or college. While a curriculum is important to follow, the instructors that mereely followed the curriculum seemed uninspired. The instrutors that stood out in my mind always went above and beyond and included supplemental materials. The supplemental materials and additional learning activities expanded on the curriculum and displayed the instructor's enthusiasm towards the subject. When an instructor is enthusiastic and inspired, it is contagious and motivates the students.
I agree any way you can bring additional information on the subject to make it more interesting will enhance the learning experience. I also like to talk about my own experiences in the work world to make a connection with my students.
I totally agree. I always like to bring something "extra" into my lectures. Be it an aricle from one of the professional journals, an instructional video or a specific case study from the field, it always brings up the energy and excitement in the classrooom.
Courtney,
You make some great points involving curriculum and adding supplemental materials. As an instructor sometimes it is easier to add supplemental materials that will make the class more exciting and easier to comprehend. Not all of the information that is given with the curriculum is easily understood by the students. I am one of those instructors who is always looking for supplemental materials to add life to my classes. Yes, you are correct, when the instructor is enthusiastic and inspired, it is contagious and the students tend to be more motivated and willing to go the extra mile to learn.
Courtney,
Good comments about how certain of your previous instructors separated themselves from the general run of instructors due to their dedication and professionalism. The key is to personalize the curriculum to your style and delivery and success will follow.
