I agree with you that the instructor should arrive at least 15 minutes early. It is a little akward for me if I walk in to class and I have early bird students there before me. Also, time is needed for the instructor to write on the board the goal for the day and get things prepared. If I don't get to class early, I end up feeling rushed and not as organized for the entire class period.

Naomi,
I feel the same way and this is why I always come early so I can get settled.

I noticed that when I arrive early I do not feel rushed and this make the class go smoothly.

David,
Good approach and one that helps you and your students get settled in and ready for class. I have on the average 70 students and I wish I had a class of 6. It would be fun to teach a class of this size in more of a seminar format and be able to get into some indepth discussions.

Donna,
This is something I do and have always done. Being there early lets me "read" the class for that session and then if needed adjust my approach based upon what I learn, plus I enjoy visiting with my students and getting to know them better.

I like to arrive early to make sure the computer is on, warm up the PowerPoint projector, etc. I don't spend much time greeting my students as I only have 6 this year!
