preparing and planning
I've always find that having my students read ahead for the topic of the day gets them prepared for discussion. I can zero in on particular students who have difficulty understanding the topic and that even helps me more in providing them the additional support they need. I simply concepts to their level of understanding until they get it so everyone of my students are on the same page.
Holly,
Good strategy. Thanks for sharing it with us. I know it will be of help to other instructors as they look for ways to get their students into the material prior to class.

I like to have my students read ahead as well. I give them a thinking paper, and what that is, is a paper that has some questions about the chapter they were to read just to get the thought process started. it is not graded but for the student to use as a study tool. that way I know form the beginning of class what information to focus on.
Tripp,
Good point to help the students to continue to move forward in the content. By being prepared in advance they are ready to discuss and any help you can lend them in getting them to prepared will be appreciated.

Students should definitely prepare for their next class so they can participate in the lesson discussions. Without preparation they have to learn as the instructor teaches a new topic. Also, is essential that instructors prepare to give each class and so they can present the material in a professional manner and answer any questions as needed.
Douglas,
This is a good "soft" approach to encourage students to come to class prepared and ready to learn.

It is always good if students read the textbook portion prior to class. But as I'm sure everyone knows, how many actually do read beforehand.
If someone has a hard time comprehending something I ask them if they read the material beforehand. If they did not, I use it as a teaching point to the class without making the person look too bad.
