This is my approach as well for the reasons you state. I need to get settled into the setting before class starts and when I do I am set for the duration of the class. I like to get a "read" on the mood of the class and by being there early I can do this. As a result I know how to start the class off with activities that match their mood.

Being prepared for class creates the mood of the class. Gives you time to focus on what you are going to cover in class and also gives you time to focus on the students that come to class early looking for extra help with the class.

it can also gain respect from students showing up late and unprepared worse thing you can do.
