Planning & Prep.

As a new instructor with a strong background in project and program management, I approached instruction from a perspective of managing time and resources, and leadership. This course helpd to fill in some of the blanks which can be left open when transitioning from a leadership-management role. I appreciated how the course suggests adhering to schedules, curriculum and guidelines, also the importance of flexibility and slightly fine tuning the course to the needs and individual learning styles of the students. Planning and preparation should include not only the lesson plans, but planning for on the spot changes, having back-up plans when things do not go according to plan. Would anyone agree that adequate planning & preparation can require an hour or more per day?

Virginia,
Color and graphics help to focus students onto the topic being covered. So the more color and activity you can introduce in your instruction the higher the degree of engagement you are going to have.

We have a lot of anatomy and physiology in my class. I try to give my students handouts that are in color. They seem to focus on this more than in the gray tones. The students are able to see in more detail the muscles and organs of the body. I spend a lot of time coordinating my lectures, hands-on time, and labeling tests so that I use many styles of teaching in one class period.

Planning and preparation is very important before you step foot in a classroom, but you must also be prepared for unforseen things that my occue. You must be prepared in season and out of season.

Edward,
That is for sure. It is not fair to the students and certainly not professional.

i agree if ample time is not given to prep then not only do you lose students due to lack of interest but you end up looking bad and will not be respected as an instructer

Amber,
I know the results of your planning time reflects on the quality of your teaching. You are using your instructional knowledge and skills to target your students and engage them in the learning process to the maximum extent possible.

I find myself planning and preparing much longer than I expected to. I think at least and hour a day should be used for planning. There are many different activites and lessons to get ready for and in reality one hour isn't even enough.

Clifton,
I like the way you approach the teaching of the basis as well as ways t adapt to the current situations. In your field the ability to problem solve is a valuable asset and one students need to make a part of their skill set.
