Syllabus as a well plan
It is very important to make sure your syllabus is up to date and that you are following it. If you have to, you can make changes as the class moves along but make sure each student receives an updated copy. How can you be sure the student is using the updated syllabus? Refer to it in class and upload it where students can access it. this will help you stay organized and professional.

Novel use of the syllabus beyond the general use of it being an informational document. This way the students are being held accountable through your application of it.

I explain to my students in the first meeting that the syllabus is our contract. It represents what they can expect from me as well as what I will be expecting from each of them. I've used it later in the semester when a student is not working to potential as a "remember the agreement we had" moment. Followed by: "Do you think you are holding up your side of the agreement?"

You make a good point about helping students see the value of the syllabus. By referring to it and making it a working document in the class the students will soon start to refer to it for course requirements, polices and assignments, thus reducing the number of questions they ask about the logistics of the course.
