How many hours a week?

On the average, how many hours a week should we take to prepare our classes?

Judy,
This is a difficult question to answer because it depends on the course being taught. Some content courses like English may require extensive grading effort and others that more lab based may require only occasional time for homework evaluation. If the time you are spending on correcting homework is extensive I would suggest that you look for ways to do more evaluation work in class by the students. Change the assignments to reduce the volume of assignments being submitted or seek help from your college administration.

I would like to know how many hours a week the average instructor spends of their own time at home correcting homework?

This depends on how new the couse material is to the instructor. ALSO, what "current" industry information has been published that should be included to support the course.

Fernando,
You have a very good model laid out in terms of your class preparation. As a result of your effort I am sure you have engaged and focused students that are benefiting from your efforts.

Personally, I can spend up to 5 hours a day preparing for my classes. Mainly because i try to make sure i have multiple ways for my students to learn the material. I am a Spanish teacher, so this means there must be a reading, writing, and speaking section for my lessons so my students are able to use the language in all its formats.

Andrew,
Very hard question to answer as it depends on so many different factors. Variables such as course content, times you have taught the course, changes that have occurred in the field, etc. all contribute to the time investment formula. Some weeks I will spend 20 hours because I am developing a new content section and creating activities to support it, other times I am good to go after a hour review.
