Planning and Preparation
Planning and preparation is important in the classroom setting because this allows the instructor to deliver a meaningful lesson and better teach the students.
Jennifer,
This is not an unusual situation. The challenge is to take the standardized material and personalize it so the students will see your passion for sharing the content. When I teach courses like this I supplement the material with handouts that are summaries of current content, best practices, etc.. This helps the students to stay current and have a more complete picture of their field.

At my school, most materials are planned for me. I often find those materials to be incomplete or even slightly inaccurate. It's important for me to plan with significant time to discuss my concerns with my program director.
Planning is necessary to accomplish a systematic, organized procedure of communicating the learning materials the students
Suzarie,
Right you are. In addition, being prepared helps you to have the confidence needed to step into the teaching situation and feel comfortable with the knowledge you have and the strategies you are going to use. This is very important in setting you up as the learning leader.

Being prepared allows for a better flow of communication and succinctness. When you are knowledgeable about a subject matter you are clearer and also able to elaborate on points rather than sticking to what is on the power point.
Marilyn,
So true. It doesn't take much for students to start to turn away from an instructor they perceive as being disorganized and ill prepared. When this happens the class sessions are very long for everyone including the instructor.

If the instructor has not adequately planned and prepared the lesson, it can give students the impression that the instructor is unorganized, does not care, and/or is weak or uncomfortable with the subject matter. The instructor may then lose credibility with the students.
planing and preperation is necessary for class room and outside activities. be sure that the students know what is expected of them and the accomplishments that have to be acheieved between both class room and outside activities
Stephanie,
Right you are about the necessity of planning and preparation. Without these two elements students are not going to be engaged and focused on the content.
