Using a well prepared Syllabus is always important because it keeps your day on track so you dont fall behind in the course,

I think it helps students to plan for the entire quarter so that they are more successful and able to manage their time

A well prepared syllabus allows the instructor to dictate the pace of the class and what topics will be covered. Due dates for assignments are clearly defined as well as the grading and course policies requirements.

Dario,
Yes, it does and that is why having a well prepared one is so important. It is a road map for everyone to follow.

A Well Prepared syllabus show the student that both the student and teacher will have to complete goals set out for the class.

The students know exactly what they need to prepare for on a daily basis. They have a clear view of what they need to accomplish in order to keep up with course content.

Having a well-prepared syllabus gives the students a clear and precise outline of what is going to be expected both from them as students and also from the instructor. It shows them what will be taught in the class and what can be expected from the course.

It lets the students know what is expected of them for the class. Also, it doesn't allow any room for guesswork from the students.

A detailed syllabus is essential to help students
stay organized and be ready for class discussion.

Lindsey ,
This is a great resource for you and the other instructors. The instructional designers can put the syllabus together in a way that will support your informational needs while sharing the necessary content.

A well prepared syllabus is very important, because it gives the students an immediate sense of what the course is about and what's expected from them. It promotes a mutual understanding and respect.

A well prepared syllabus is esstential if an instructor wants the class to run smoothly. Teaching at a career college, my syllabus is created by a team of instructional designers. The syllabus is put in a logical format that shows what topics will be covered and when. This also tells the student what reading should be done before class and prepares them for possible discussion topics. While a well prepared syllabus is not the only piece to creating a good course it is an essential foundation piece.

The syllabus should outline the goals and objectives of the course, clearly define, expectations, and give the students an idea of what is going to be covered. The syllabus is key in conveying crucial information in what will be shared over the next weeks of coursework. A well-prepared syllabus saves headaches for both instructor and students.

Patricia,
Good way to make students accountable. They receive, read, listen and sign. This makes the document viable for them and connects the content with the requirements.

A well-prepared syllabus is like a great recipe that is passed down to generations. It is the operating manual that builds the course outcome expectations for the students. It sets the climate for the class, answers all the questions students might have with regard to policies, grading, assignment due dates, and other relevant information. Where I work, our curriculum folks write the syllabi for every course, however instructor suppliment them with addenda that answer whatever is left out of the syllabus for our particular course.

The very first day of class, I go through the entire syllabus with the class. Sometime there will be moaning and groaning but it never fails that a student will discover something that they had not seen before in their other class syllabi. After the syllabus review, I pass out the syllabus quiz that I then allow them to correct themselves and sign off on. I return a copy of their signed and corrected quiz to keep on hand just in case there is any misinterpretation of the rules and expectations.

I find that having a well-prepared syllabus enables me to keep the students interested as well as keep me on track. Everyone,(including myself), has a feel for how things will flow. It also leaves no room for debate when it comes to how things will be handled (due dates for assignments, projects etc.)

Using a well-prepared syllabus is important to the teacher as well as the student. It helps the teacher to stay on track as far as the course content that must be covered. It helps the student as far as what to expect in the course as well as what is expected of him or her.

Pascale,
When I have students like this I have a individual talk with them and ask for their cooperation in the class. Then I set a time frame for them changing their behavior. If they don't I remove them from the class because I will not let one or two students ruin the learning of others. If the students change their behavior I compliment them so they are encouraged to continue their positive actions.
Gary

It gives you and the student a guideline for the class material and leaves nothing to question for the daily class material covered.
