Course Development

I notice that when teaching my courses I always have students who are at very different academic levels. For instance some are very advanced while some are slower to learn. How do you appropriately develop a course that is stimulating enough for your fast paced students yet slow enough for your lower students to keep up?

Morgan,
Good question and one that challenges all of us instructors. Every class that I teach has such a mix and as a result I need to plan a number of different activities that will reach each student. I have found that creating learning or work groups that are populated with students of all abilities are effective. I give the groups case studies and assign each student in the group a certain task to preform as the group works toward the completion of the case study. Another strategy I use is providing all students with problems they can work on for additional professional points. These problems are at various levels of difficulty so students of varying levels of ability can be successful. This way my higher level students are being challenged and my lower skilled students are provided opportunities for growth.
