Supplemental materials

Since I have collected alot of books over the years from my education experiences and books that I have picked up over the years at CEU courses and seminars, I utilize materials out of these resources and make practice quizzes and homework assignments to use in addition to the information in the course textbook. I feel it expands the students knowledge even more to see more than one point of view or example to drive a point home regarding subject matter

Tamika,
This is such good advice for instructors to follow. We need to make sure our content is relevant and adds value to our lectures because this increases the ROI for our students as a result.

I agree. It is essential to keep the supplemental materials fresh since trends do change. I tend to update my resource library every 2-3 months.

Richard,
In kindergarten we were taught to share and that principle still holds true as educators. Sharing means that we can gain new insights into how to be more effective at what we do and we are helping others in the process.

I agree. I find myself sharing many supplemental materials with all of the instructors in my school. We definitely help each other in that regard. When one of us finds a useful tool or handout, we will share it with everyone.

Phyllis,
Knowing this about their instructors is important. They need to know that they are receiving the latest information from a professional they can respect. This is the foundation upon which learning is based.

I agree. I think it is important to model to the students that we stay up to date in our field. I often bring current events out of the news that relate to the class and we discuss it.

David,
Good way to train them to stay current in their field. This is a very important skill to have and the more they see the value of it the more they will use it when they are out in the workplace.

In addition to the books and printed material that are needed for class presentation that I already have, I direct my students to scour the local newspapers, and you-tube-type internet sources for "breaking news" or changes in the Industry that will impact them.
Being up-to-date on legal decisions that will advance or limit their job performance is something they should learn to start doing NOW, so that when they enter the field for real, they can stay one step ahead of the game.

Bonita,
I agree. This sharing is so beneficial for everyone plus we have a better idea of what our colleagues are covering in their classes.

I find it interesting to be able to contact other teachers/staff members for their materials, homework assignments to gain additional knowledge and ideas. This is not only a learning tool, but would possibly make the subject presented more interesting and informative to the students.

Jeffrey,
Sounds like you have a good resource library to support your instructional effort. By having such resources you are able to refine your instructional efforts without having to reinvent the wheel over and over again.
