Class Prepartation
It is important to arrive early and prepare for the class put yourself in the place of student when preparing
Alison,
I like to arrive early as well because I can get a read on the mood of the class and interact with all of the students so they will feel comfortable in the class.

I think that arriving early to class allows students to ask you questions if they have any before class starts.
Dahlia,
I think this is a good strategy to follow or at least it is for me. Once I am there and settled in and can really concentrate on making sure everything is ready to start the new class off well. Much easier on my nerves for sure.

Preperation is an important key to classroom success. Typically, I arrive 30 minutes early on a new class start. By that, it gives the opportunity to view the class roster and become familiar with new names. It calms the jitters and helps me to focus on the students as they arrive.
William,
All good points about the value of arriving in class early and being prepared. I like my 10-15 minutes of early time because I can interact with the students, get set up and settle in for the upcoming class. This is one of my favorite times of each class session.

it shows the students what you expect from them. if you arive early and prepared that shows them that is what you expect from them. also it gives me a chance to gauge the class and see if any of the students seem distracted by what happened before they arived.
Carol,
I like to arrive in the class early so I can chat with the students about life in general in an informal way. By being causal I can get a read for the mood of the class for that session. That helps me to make any adjustments I need to to make sure I keep my students engaged.

Besides arriving early, preparing for class before even arriving is a good choice. Early arrival can be used to do the basics like making copies of handouts. But actually preparing for the class should be done well in advance.
Richard,
I arrive early for class as well because it gives me a chance to get a "read" on the mood of the class and have a few minutes to chat with students. By the time class is ready to begin I feel I know how to proceed and I have the students with me.

I arrive early to greet the students to show them that I want to be there, and to challenge them to beat me to class.
Patrice,
Good tip and one we instructors need to remember always. Be being a bit early and getting settled in you can get a read on the mood of the students and adjust your instructional plans to keep the students engaged throughout the session.
