Hannah,
Thank you for the helpful information you have shared with us. I know these comments will be of help to other instructors especially those just starting out as they plan their instructional delivery and selection of content order.

I am also new and have also found it helpful to follow order of text. This helps students know what is coming up. Syllabus/calendar does change due to various reasons...It can be as simple as the class needs a little more time reviewing material...It doesn't take much for calendar to begin to shift...So using the text as a guide has been extremely helpful. Additionally students are encouraged that you are working from the text As you can use page numbers and images as additional examples...
Steve,
Don't try to take on too much as a new instructor. Concentrate on a few activities that you know you will be able to accomplish. Once you get comfortable with them then you can add others when you teach the course again. This way you will not be overwhelmed and will be able to keep the students moving forward in the course as outlined in the syllabus.

Dear Mr. Yates,
Although I have not been teaching for too long, I may say that I have encountered a similar situation. However, my experienced in the field helps me enormously to arrange the daily activities into a course calendar in context of the new books, chapters and skills to match the existing curriculum. This method although is time consuming give me the opportunity to develop further critical thinking skills and apply all my knowledge in order to have a course that meets all the objectives presented in the curriculum. Last, the help and contribution of my director and the input of other team members have been crucial for my developing as an instructor specially when it comes to give direction to a curriculum that at times may seem difficult to match.
