syllabus

i am new to instructing and find the homework dosen't match the syllabus example, teaching basic engines and the students are doing homework on engine R+R wouldn't it be best to have the syllabus follow the homework ex. teach baby engines and have the homework be on basic engine theory?

I agree with you. We do need to put students first and see what would be most useful for them. When things don't match on the syllabus, I also ask my colleagues who experience with the syllabus what they do.

Michael,
You make a good point because many times as an instructor you are called on to be creative as you fill in some of the blanks concerning content or best practices in the field.

you must be very creative when things dont match and no available resource to fall back on, always keep students best interest first

William,
That would be my thinking if I am understanding how you are approaching your instructional sequence. Homework to have any value to students must be tied directly into what they are learning about in the classroom/lab setting. Otherwise homework is just busy work and will be debased by the students. This method will help you to be able to take your students from simple to complex over the span of the course.
