syllabus

Can I modify a syllabus midway into the class if I see that I need to make an adjustment to my class to make sure all of the course information can be covered?

Everything was sounding good until until the last statement, I think that statement will open up a relationship problem with the instructor and the students.

Monica,
Explain that the syllabus was revised and as a result the current syllabus is the one that will be followed for the course. Let them know the revision occurred in an attempt to keep the course relevant and topical so the instruction will be timely in relation to developments in the field. At that point let them know the discussion on the revision of the syllabus is closed and the course is moving forward.

What can I do when some of the students that are retaking the course, dissagree with the syllabus because in previous classes it was different?

Marcie,
Yes you can by providing your students with a supplemental handout explaining the adjustments. Do not add to the required assignments that are listed in the syllabus. Students will accept changes and adjustments but they become understandably upset if the assignments are changed. Most often when you make content adjustments the students appreciate the fact that you are looking after their best interests and making these changes.
