Reviewing Textbook Content

I have found that as an instructor, I have compared and contrast textbooks to decipher levels of complexity. If needed, I will access whether the text explains a theory in too little detail, which can induce obfuscation within the students. Thus, during my instructional teaching, I will add some information taken from other sources into my lecture, to fil in any possible gaps or confusion that the currently used textbook can induce. While complexity and detail is warranted in some areas of discipline, I have lend myself to keeping it simple and using as much photographic representations to complete a mental comprehension of the theory.
As a professor of Modern Languages, namely Spanish language, literature as well as culture in Spanish speaking countries, I suggest using several books in class in addition to the text in order for students to engage in different language learning activites focusing on phonetics, pronumciation of new vocabulary, listening/language comprehension skills, using accompanying CD's in class, as well as using short story reading books that contain visual material that students can write about based on their reading vocabulary and grammar skills learnd in class as well as Spanish Social Studies books that focus om the history geography culture of Mexico, Latin America and Spain.
I encourage reading about Spanish movies that are presented in class which I find is a great way to to learn to speak another language, especially Spanish, which as we know is currently the most widely spoken language in our country.
Sharon,
The more resources the better. You are helping to expand the knowledge base of your students through the expansion of your own knowledge and resources. Keep up the good work!

I read information in additional textbooks as well. Often I will be able to use the examples, case studies, and assignments in the classroom. I also find good information on the internet to do the same.
Michele,
Good strategy to follow. Simple understandable segments of information will result in increased student comprehension of the content. Your addition of examples will reinforce the content being shared and give relevance and application to what is being taught.
