Teachng and engagng
We as teachers must make that connection even under challenging situation.
I sometimes worry about calling on certain students because I feel like I could be picking on them or singling them out.
Hi Chukwuka,
This is a good approach for slow learners. As an instructors and trainer, sometimes you run into persons who prove to be difficult or challenge you as the instructor. At first I would try to avoid the individual but overtime I have learnt that it is not best to avoid challenging students, but to prepare for them. I take control of the environment by asking questions directly to a specific student and address them by their names. This way one person does not take over the class.
Jamie,
You are right on target with your efforts as an instructor because you are helping your students to see value in the course even though it is outside of their specific field of study.

Brian,
Good blend of both the content of the course and the human factor in relation to the new class they are starting. Getting them settled in and feeling comfortable about how the class is going to be conducted goes a long way in catching their attention and earning their support.

I've found similar success doing the same. While my course material tends to fall outside of their particular career training (Anthropology), I try to make it relatable either on the personal or "human" level.
In my attempts to engage my students I first try to demystify the subject at hand so they're more relaxed. I've found if they are tense it makes teaching and learning harder. Next, I show them they don't need to be in dread of the instructor, me,by relating some of my missteps in my career. When they see I'm as human as they are, and I also make mistakes,it lets them know I'm supporting their objective, which is the successful completion of their current course.
Chukwuka,
Good advice for instructors. Thanks for sharing it.

Sometimes you come across slow learners or students who are disconnected with the class. What I have done would be to direct specific questions at them and address them by their names. That way they feel compelled to respond and get involved with the class.
