syllabus

I believe a syllabus is vital for the students to have, that way they are aware what is expected from them.

Samara,
I like your approach to providing additional information to your students via a handout of your own. I do the same in my classes and my students really appreciate getting this information in a condensed format. I always print this handout on colored paper and that way I can refer to it throughout the course by asking the students to take out their pink sheet so I can refer to a due date or something like that. Makes it easy for the students to find in their backpacks and they seldom get lost.

The college I teach at creates their own syllabus, but I create a course schedule to go along with it that has my assignments, deadlines, and policies as a supplement to the college's extensive syllabus. This way, I feel that after the students are scared to death by the college's syllabus, they can feel a bit more comfortable with what I give them and thankful to have the information presented in a more comfortable way.

Alexandra,
They need to know this from the beginning of the course so a clear and concise syllabus is needed. With them understanding the expectations they can plan in their minds how they will be successful and meet the goals of the course.
