We do the same by asking predetemined questions and start with the students sitting in the back row. The instructor's positive self-confidence, enthusiasm, eye contact, voice, and movement throughout the room during the initial class meeting helps to establish self-credibility with the students.

Good idea. This also gives you some insight into where the students have been, their experiences and where they see themselves going.
I have found that I use this information throughout the course phase as I work with them.
