Order of events on the first day

I complete most if not all the events listed during the first day, but I have been doing so in a slightly different order, is that acceptable? Also sometimes I have students that are so gravely concerned with a course item that I will skip foward to what that may be for a breif discussion to ease their concerns so they are not distracted by them. Is that advised?

I like this idea of clearing away any distractions!

ALWAYS, within the first several minutes on the 1st day of class I ask the entire class if ANYONE has any IMMEDIATE issue at all on their minds. Car or ride concerns, family issues, impending phone call, monetary problems - whatever. I cannot get them to "buy-in" to this most critical phase (initial introduction) if I do not command their full attentivness.

Hi Mark,
The order for sharing information with students should be based upon easing their concerns and getting them excited about the upcoming course content. As the instructor you should get a "feel" for where the students are at and how you best can get them engaged in the learning progress, that will then dictate the order of how you present the information the first day.
