course objectives

one thing I like to do is poll the students and find out what they want to get out of the course and anything that is not covered in the course out line I try to add it when it is applicable

Sometimes my students surprise me on how much or how little they know about the course they are about to take. On our first meeting,I encourage my students to share what skills they think the course provides.
I follow up with an overview of the syllabus emphasizing how we will master the expectations they have from the course. I particularly enjoy including what I call aha information to entice them to attend all class sessions.
I also encourage them to bring new knowledge to share with the rest of us.
Interaction on the first day demonstrates to the students that they are important to the success of the class.

Hi Kelvin,
Thanks for sharing this feedback strategy. As you say it helps you plan the course more accurately to focus on the learning needs of the students. I also, use the index card to get feedback from the students after they complete an assignment or project. I ask them to make a few comments about how effective they found the learning experience to be. I get really good feedback and also can redirect my approach if I need to.

i also have the students write on an index card what they want to learn from this course and if it is not covered in the material i try to give a little bit of time to discuss the things that they wanted to know

I do the same thing and also ask the students what they expect from the course
