Never a second chance for first impressions!
When a student walks into a new classroom,he is full of questions...How hard will this class be?
Will the instructor be tough or easy...Will I be
accepted and do well?
All of these concerns will be answered during the first class meeting, and the instructor,
whether he knows it or not, will answer them. The
instructor sets the "mood" of the class-his or
her attitudes set the environment for learning-or failing to learn. Therefore it is essential
that the instructor, first of all, know what kind of atmosphere he wants to create.
Not only seting standards verbily, but in writing. Have a hand out, that they sign for, this eleminats any questions about the standards of the class.
Well said the first inpretion that we give to he student ios very inportant.
I AM IN TOTAL AGREEMENT WITH YOU,SET THE STANDARDS ON THE FIRST DAY, SO THE STUDENTS WILL KNOW WHAT TO EXPECT.
Its important for instructor to be well prepared for all those questions that students will have on their first day. therefore careful planning and preparation will help tremendously as well as lets the students know what your expectations are and that provides you with opportunity to establish yourself as an instructor of high quality and integrity. The fact is one can never be too prepared for the first class!!!
I agree completely with the fact there is only one opportunity to make first impressions, no matter what the setting and the position! Its important to walk the talk so students understand that its meant how its said. that helps them to know that insructor is credible person. This will set the right tome for instructor and students and they would want to listen and learn
Well said! I like to set the "tone" for the class the first day.If you set it high you can always bring it down a note or two if you see you have a good claas but if set low you will never beable to bring it up.
I think it is important for the teacher to be reflective and know what is important in the moment for students. It may not be what was in the plan!

I totally agree. Setting the standards for the course on the first day is one of the most important measures that you take as an instructor. The student should leave the first day of class with a clear understanding about the courses objectives, requirements and expectations of the instructor.
Hi Marvin,
Well said. It sounds like your students really enjoy your classes as a result of your teaching style and preparation.
Teaching can be fun for both the students and teachers while much learning is occurring. Keep up the good work.

When a student meets an instructor for the first time, many times it is right then and there that student has decided if the class is going to suit what they came to school to learn. Personaly I love to have fun. My teaching style is full of icebreakers that let the students know upfront we can have fun and still learn lots. I never ever offend anyone and try to include everyone in class conversations. Dont ruin that one chance to have the student trust and respect you.
