What Did Think
Here goes remember the first time you saw someone that you were meeting for the first time. I do and many remember the first time they met me. Why you ask well until I took the postion that i have now i had hair to my waist am covered in tattoos and that is what people see. Now what they do not see is a college educated former business owner of a successful company and a great father (according to my son). But they go by first impression. Now if the first impression scares you off or makes you uncomfortable or uncertain about the person abilities why are you gonna go back. Remember this the next time you get ready to meet a class or person for the very FIRST time.
first impressions are all important we are like the first thing a new born bird sees and it will consider us to be its role model there fore we must be sure that we are in a proffesional mode and up to the job of exceeding our students exspectaions
true first inpressions are a important fact. but first impressions are the most difficult to over come. How many time have i seem a preview for a tv show or movie and thought wow this is going to be a great movie. but i get dissapointed when i went to see the movie. same with students. but as instructors i dont think that we should not make judgments on the first meeting of the class. ocasionaly you might find a diamond in the ruff that needs a little polish to bring out the gleam
The first impression works both ways. I think i am a good judge of people and have been shown later that my first impression of a student was wrong, based from the first day.
Hi Rocklan,
Thanks for sharing this personal experience about teaching. I know it will be of benefit to other instructors as they establish themselves in the classroom.

First impressions are the most lasting, being with students for 9 weeks at time I have learned that for myself that that I needed to show more self control and set the stage the first couple of weeks when it comes to staying on task, and maintaining class control. As we roll into weeks 4-5&6 we can be a little relaxed now that the class and the instructor know each other. By weeks 7-9 even if the class got more relaxed, knowing that the instructor was firm and set the standard I found it very easy to pull in the reins. All it took was one class to be relaxed (being the buddy type instructor) from the start and it was the longest 9 weeks that I had to work.
