Getting to know you

The first day is always the nervous day for all people involved. Best way that I have found is to introduce yourself, and have others do the same. To get to know who is in your class.

Hi Farley,
Yes, they are more involved in the course if they have a chance to share and get settled into it. This is also helpful in establishing rapport with them.

If you give a student the chance to open up and tell you a little about themselves during the introduction to the class and then you ask them questions to learn more, it seems that they are that much more open to discussion and asking questions in classroom learning situations.

Good point, Billy; it's always a good idea to get students started in a professional, non-threatening environment. Thanks,

The first day I try to get my guys relaxed. Self intro's, I will tell them about myself and get them to tell me a bit about them as well. I also tell them they won't loose any points during practice week because it,s pracitce week, that seems to let them know the can relax for the first two weeks, but then it,s finals.

Finding common bonds is always a good thing. It's important to maintain the instructor/student relationship though. I struggled with that when I started this job. You can be friendly but not everyone's friend.

Yes, I agree. It's also good to ask them if they have a particular interest they may want to pursue in your class. Other students may share the same interest.
