Classroom Trust
The moment an instructor walk inside the classroom the student knows whether an instructor could command respect or someone they can manipulate in the process. Proper conduct, house rules needs to be set and timely short humour at times helps in order for them to understand that instructors are humane and trust will serve as there foundation.
Hi Ashley,
I like your approach. I often tell my students that I use the "Incredible Hulk" model of class management. They don't want to see me upset because not only will I turn green I will take action. They get a smile out of this but they get the message. Your approach is dead on and sets the tone for the class. Kindness but firmness is a good balance to have.
Gary
I always tell my students, "Do not mistake my kindness for weakness!" They know that I am fairly easy going, but that I will adhere to the syllabus and to the classroom protocol for proper conduct, etc.
