keep it real
as an instructor the moment i walk in the classroom i start to set the tone for how the class is going to run i don;t beleive in a stress out class i like to have fun and teach at the same time and students pick up on that real fast the classes go very smooth and fast.
Hi Sandra,
Good plan. Your students know what is coming and that they are going to have a good time while being challenged with learning. That is what career development is all about.

ditto... I lecture on Thursdays and Fridays. I have shared the following perception with my students.
Thursdays are Therapeutic Thursdays
Fridays are Freedom Fridays.
I set the tone for those two days, and surprisingly it has been very successful. In fact, the students look forward to the relaxed, conducive learning environment.
Hi Maria,
One way is to monitor the way the class is going and prevent it from getting too far from the topic. Without knowing how they take advantage of you it is hard to respond beyond what I just shared. If I had some more details I would be glad to give you my perspective.
I will say you have to be in charge of the situation no matter how relaxed the class is and what activities you are doing because as you know if you aren't they will take advantage of you.
Gary
I like to keep class easygoing and fun, too. However, I find that sometimes students take advantage of me. How do you prevent them from getting the wrong idea?
Hi Raymond,
An instructor always has to keep control of the class. But there is nothing wrong with having some fun while learning. One of the ways is to have competitions in the class as well as using games to check for knowledge. These types of activities are fun to do and directly related to the learning of the content of the course.

Having fun is a good way to start the class but sometimes then class can get the wrong message and get out of control. The fun should always be reeled back in periodcally and the serious side needs to be in the mix as well.
Certainly true, Christian, honesty is a hallmark of the professional relationship among instructor and students. Just curious, what other qualities or characteristics do you feel are at the foundation to teaching success when working with the adult learner?

an instuctor must be true and honest with the students. honesty seems to go a long away with the students. i feel that shows the students that we are also human.
The students always appreciate the straight forward approach. Sometimes in our school the students have either been presented with false information or did not understand what the school really offers and then the instructor has to be liason between the school and student
yes fun is very powerful learning tool . and class room control needs to maintained. be human it goes along way. and don't be afraid to learn form the students.
Agreed! Having fun while learning is the best way to go.
