Scavenger Hunt
On my first day being with students, I need to ask each student to complete a scavenger hunt of the facility to become familiar with supplies, building structure, etc. When would be the best time to complete the scavenger hunt?
What a great idea. You could also have them hunt through the syllabus and material you give them the first day for information about what they should be able to do after completing the course, activities they will want to do during the quarter/semester to be successful.

I have found the best time is after the introductions and expectations of the course phase. Then the scavenger hunt gets to them up moving and talking with the other students they have just met. Helps to create rapport with each other and you.
