I will always tell them about my self they always want to know and make sure they under stand who is in charge of the class always try to see what the skill level of the class is so you have some kind of starting point. You don,t won,t to go over there heads, they have to make lab group also so they have to work together the first day

In addition to the previously mentioned points,I ask my students to submit one written idea of something related to the course subject material that they personally would like to learn during this course.I then attempt to incorporate the top three suggestions into the structured class syllabus.Since each class is different,the content changes slightly preventing the instructor from falling into robotic mode.It also gives the students a feeling of involvement and ownership.
I also give the student a little bit of my background and also ask about there back ground. It gives them some insight of what to exspect when they get in to the feild. I have found that gets there intrest back up exspecialy after they have been in school for a long time and have been to many diffeant classes. they sometimes forget what got them here in the first place
I like to have students stand give me there name,backgound.It helps break the ice,also gives them the chance to see the feeling of standing in front of others.

Good use of group dynamics. Working together helps to prepare students when they get into the workforce. They are going to have to get along with others and contribute their fair share to the process. Class projects, case studies and panel presentations help this process along.

I also create an assignment that will allow them to collaborate with other students in the class, so that they will be comfortable with their fellow classmates and it also sets the tone for participation.
