Class control

Let Class know who is in charge the first day and that your not a push over, and that to get respect you must give respect

Hi Andrea,
Good job of regaining control of your class. This is always hard to do after they sense a weak point, in this case being a new teacher. I wish you much success in your teaching career.

I msde the mistake of letting them know that i was new at teaching on the 1st day, but i have go control of my students. Even had to suspend one this week.

This is true. Treat the students the same way you would like to be treated. They will respect you.

Hi Tracey,
You make a good point about being in charge. In every situation someone will be in charge. If it is a teaching situation it has to be the instructor. If not then it is going to be a very long course phase since the students will be dictating what is going to go on in the class. It is good you have had this experience early in your teaching career so you have a practical situation that helps you know that from now on you will take control of the class and drive the direction the class is going to take.

This past quarter was the first quarter I actually taught a class--I have been teaching nursing clinicals and that had gone well, but for the first weeks of my pharm lab class, I guess I wasn't in control enough--finally one week I had to say "I'm the leader here--you are here to learn!!"

you need to be in control but don't make yourself seem superior to everyone else
