Printed versus Digital Course Outline

My method introduces uploading a digital version of the course outline and syllabus to the students prior to the first day of class. On the first day of class, we go over the material on the projector and discuss it in class.

I really don't see the necessity of printing thousands of pages of material to students possessing laptops with the ability of using technology and downloading digital files.

Hi Shelley,
You make a good point. The more variety we can offer students to receive input the higher the rate of retention. By having your syllabus in the two formats you are letting chose their mode of input preference. Should help them with retention.

I also like the option of hard copy and digital syllabus. Just like students learning from a variety of mediums, I suspect that some students are more comfortable in a digital medium when it comes to reading material.

Hi Frank,
Good plan for providing resources for your students in a number of different ways. You are keeping them in the loop from every perspective.

I provide a digital syllabus as well. In addition I provide a detailed course outline indicating what is going to be discussed that day, any quizzes, any readings, any homework, etc. In addition I provide the lecture notes for any lectures as a link in the course outline.

The students that desire hard copy can print the information as they desire.

Hi Sabrina,
There is nothing wrong with having a printed copy of material for reference and review. I personally enjoy holding and reading a novel so I can savior the writing of the author. By having printed course material available students can create a connection between the content and their memories. Any bridges that can be created are helpful with retention.

Depending on the industry as well as age of students, the option of having a prited version is necesary or have been my experience in my field. "Culinary"
I do admire technology, but I still like to be able to slow read, and mark and save my papers.

Hi Patricio,
Students today are very familiar with the technology that is available but they still like the personal touch when it comes to instruction. They need to know the instructor cares about them and their success.
Gary

I think our generation is very open for learnings styles with all new tech.

A few slides and a quick preview of the course content usually is suficient, and nobody has to pick up the litter in the parking lot.

Hi David,
I agree we should save "trees" when we can. The printing and distribution of a syllabus should be done in relation to the policies of the college. If electronic versions will work they should be done that way.
