Welcome to students
I teach online classes and I have included a short audio file along with a welcome email to introduce myself. I also include my photo in the instructor area. I think this helps students in online classes know that they have a real instructor and not just a robot.
Brian, I love the audio file idea! It is also nice for students to get a chance to see who we are as instructors and get to know a little bit about us.I have noticed in my online discussion postings that students will use the instructor introduction as a model for how they introduce themselves. It is a great way to set the stage for a great course experience for everyone.
Great idea. There seems to be a disconnect sometimes with online and that is a great way to help them see/hear you as an instructor and not just someone who is grading assignments and papers.

You are right about needing to help your online students to see you as a human being. Your method is a great one. The use of the audio file gives the students a sense of your voice, flow and how you would deliver the course content if you were lecturing. This really helps to set the course up as if it were a direct instruction one. Great job.
